2012. Hand-cut polycarbonate, record player.

This work reimagines Brion Gysin’s ‘Dreamachine’, described by its maker as ‘the first apparatus designed to be viewed with one’s eyes closed’. It was distributed as a pattern, from which anyone could make their own paper or cardboard Dreamachine. An internal light would shine through the cutout patterns, projecting onto the viewer’s closed eyelids to produce visions and hallucinations. Rendered in transparent plastic, this work could be said to both empty out this iconic psychedelic form and at the same time foreground it as an object in its own right. In place of the hallucinatory visions produced by the original Dreamachine, this work offers the apparatus itself as an object of contemplation.
